LibreOffice says “no AI” is a feature: when that might be the right call

Most office apps are adding chatbots. LibreOffice is doing the opposite on purpose. The Document Foundation says the default install of LibreOffice contains no generative AI, and that is a design choice: your document should not leave the machine unless you decide it does. TechCrunch’s October 6, 2026 write-up brought that stance to a wider audience. This is not an anti-AI rant. It is a Tuesday choice about where sensitive text lives.

What they are (and are not) claiming

LibreOffice 26.8 ships without built-in generative AI. TDF’s criteria for ever adding it include: you choose where inference runs, content does not leave the computer without permission, no telemetry, no single-provider lock-in, ODF stays the format, and the feature is optional. Today they say no default integration meets that list. They also say users who want AI can install third-party extensions (often talking to a local model). Those extensions are not TDF products. Treat them like any add-on: check whether a cloud endpoint is on.

When “no AI in the doc tool” is the point

Use a local, offline-capable editor when the file itself should stay put:

  • School, clinic, legal, or nonprofit drafts with names and case details
  • HR notes, payroll snippets, or anything your admin forbids in cloud AI
  • Personal documents you would not paste into ChatGPT even redacted

In those cases the job is “finish the document,” not “get a clever rewrite from a cloud model.” Open LibreOffice (or another local suite your org allows). Write. Save as ODF or the format your recipient needs. If you still want a rewrite later, paste a redacted excerpt into a chatbot in a separate window, then bring the edited lines back by hand.

A simple Tuesday workflow

  1. Keep the sensitive file in LibreOffice (or your approved local app).
  2. For tone help, copy only the paragraph that needs work. Strip names, IDs, and addresses first.
  3. Paste into Free ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Luna), Claude, Gemini, or Grok with a short prompt: rewrite clear and firm, no new facts.
  4. Paste the result back into LibreOffice. You remain the sender of record.

When to skip LibreOffice’s stance (and when to skip cloud AI)

Skip switching tools mid-project if your school or workplace already standardizes on Google Docs or Word and the file is not sensitive. Convenience wins when the content is public anyway. Skip assuming “open source” means “no AI extensions exist”; they do, and some may call cloud APIs. Skip cloud AI entirely for medical, legal, or kids’ full records. “No AI in the default install” is a calm option for people who need the document to stay on the laptop. Use it when that is the job.
