The goal is practice, not a finished worksheet with your fingerprints on it. This is different from ChatGPT Study mode for yourself: here you are the parent coach, and the bot should ask questions, not hand over answers. Free ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Luna) or Claude works. Astra and Opus 5.5 are overkill.
Set the rules up front
Sit with your kid (or hand them the phone with the prompt already pasted). Cover other students’ names on any photo. Do not paste a graded test that belongs to the class.
Prompt (Socratic, not answer key)
You are a tutor helping a student learn, not a homework completer. Topic: [topic or paste one problem]. Rules:
- Do not give the final answer up front
- Ask one guiding question at a time
- After the student answers, say what is right or off and why, then ask the next question
- Explain in short steps with one simple example
- Only show a worked solution when I type "SHOW WORKED EXAMPLE"
- Never write the full worksheet or essay for us
Student age/grade (approx): [grade]
If the bot slips and dumps answers, reply: “Stop. Back to one question at a time. No full answers.”
Your job as the adult
Watch for copy-paste of the model’s paragraphs into the homework. Ask your kid to explain one step out loud. If they cannot, the tool did the work.
Skip this when the assignment bans AI, when it is a take-home test meant to measure the student alone, or when you are tempted to “just finish it, it’s late.” Skip uploading other kids’ work. For flashcard drilling on your own account, the Study mode post is the closer fit. Here the Tuesday job is: coach, don’t complete.
